Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference between alcoholic patients and normal controls on plasma 5-
hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) concentration, aggression, and their correlation. We compared 40 alcoholic patients
who were admitted to Korea Veterans Hospital and Chunchon National Mental Hospital with 30 controls. All subjects were
assessed by plasma 5-HIAA concentration, National Mental Hospital Alcoholism Screening Test, State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory. Results were as follows£º1) Alcoholic patients¡¯ plasma 5-HIAA level was significantly lower than
controls. Scores of state anger, trait anger, and angerout in alcoholic group were significantly higher than controls. 2) There was no statistically significant correlation between plasma 5- HIAA level and aggression in alcoholic patients. Conclusively, we suggest that alcohol has a significant effect on both serotonin turnover and aggressive behavioral problems. But we cannot find correlation with plasma 5-HIAA level and aggression in Korean alcoholics. Further studies, specific and appropriate assessment and its treatment are needed for alcoholic patients.
